One thing you don’t want to leave this to chance.

Here’s a story about socks on the floor.

Smelly, dirty, sports socks thrown on a recently vaccuumed floor.

If you’re a raiser of teenagers, maybe you can relate to this.

There are two ways this situation can go down:

Me at my best:

“Son, honey, can you come here please. Can you pick up these socks and put them in the laundry basket.”

Sounds reasonable.

Me - not at my best

Inner talk: “What in the actual He-double-L? Who do these kids think I am. They will never amount to anything with these habits. And what kind of mother am I? Obviously the worst mom on the planet for never having raised them properly. I should give up on everything, parenting, career, my health. I suck at everything. Where’s the box of cookies?”

Outer talk: “son…get yer…”

You get the drift.

Same triggering event - socks on floor - drastically different reactions depending on my STATE.

Stuff like this happens.

This isn’t about shaming and blaming ourselves when we have bad moments (I have them too) but it is about taking increased responsibility for what we are practicing in our hearts, minds and bodies:

  • the sensations we cultivate

  • the way we breathe and carry ourselves

  • the emotions we have

  • the thoughts we think

    • ***Most people try to change thoughts by the way - but it’s actually way easier to focus on sensations, breath, posture as a lever for change.

We need to do this as leaders, because the impact we create is too big to leave to chance.

Instead we need to learn how to call up our best, most purposeful and resilient states on demand.

Consistently.

How do you know if you need to work on this?

Look at the results you are getting in life, career, relationship

Are you happy with them?

  • If so, keep going

  • If not, it’s time to practice a new way of being
