The Body is the Way

So, why am I fixated on the body?

For the longest time, I struggled to make a personal change in a relationship. There was a to-remain-unnamed human in my life who always seemed to bring out the worst in me.

I knew it in my head.

I got it logically.

But when around this person, bam! I'd react the same old way—I avoided eye contact, tensed my shoulders, clenched my fists. Needless to say, conversations didn’t flow very well from here.

I wound up reacting in ways that were not congruent with the type of person or leader I wanted to be.

No matter what I tried—beating myself up, blaming the situation, or bribing myself with shopping sprees —nothing clicked. My bodily reaction beat my brain every single time.

Here's the deal with those ingrained habits:

  • They're lightning-fast.

  • They stick around like they're meant to last forever (because they are)

  • And they're completely normal because, hey, most of what we do happens without us even thinking about it.

But! If you're like me and have some habit or pattern you want to change —speak up more, say no without guilt, or ditch that perfectionist streak—we have to tap into what's happening below the neck.

We need to sloooow things down…

Make the unconscious conscious.

Once we're more aware of what's going on in our bodies, new choices pop up. New paths emerge—not just for us but for our teams and organizations as well.
